Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Trenton, Ontario

A tooth extraction refers to when a tooth has to be removed from its socket. When a tooth is decayed, damaged or is extremely loose, your dentist will attempt to restore it with a bonded filling, dental crown, root canal therapy or another type of treatment. However, sometimes the tooth is too heavily damaged to be saved and may have to be extracted.
Other reasons to remove a tooth are to create room for teeth to be moved into alignment during orthodontic treatment or if a tooth is blocking other teeth from erupting.
Another common reason to extract a tooth is if it’s a wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth can be found at the very back of your upper and low jaw and often appear when the patient is in their late teens to early 20s. Wisdom teeth can cause problems for nearby teeth including pain, inflammation, and even infection. These teeth can also cause pain and swelling of your gum tissues and cysts to develop.
A wisdom tooth can become impacted when it fails to erupt from the jaw and has to be removed. Depending on your case, you may have 1 to 4 wisdom teeth; however, in rare circumstances, some people may not have wisdom teeth appear or may have more than four.
It’s also important to note that if the wisdom tooth is not causing any problems and the mouth has enough room to accommodate it, it doesn’t have to be removed. During your examination, your dentist will perform a comprehensive examination, including digital X-rays, of your oral tissues to determine if a tooth has to be removed. You should provide your complete medical and dental history to your dentist as well as any medications that you’re taking.
During your procedure, you will be given an anesthesia so that you will remain completely comfortable and that you won’t feel anything. Dr. Patel & Dr. Gandhalikar along with their dental team have a wealth of experience performing this type of surgery so you can feel confident that you’re in good hands.
